Saint Adalbert Catholic Cemetery
Also known as Old Bohemian Cemetery, Old Polish Cemetery, Cmentarz św. Wojciecha (St. Wojciecha)
Niles, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Consecrated in 1872, St. Adalbert Cemetery is named after the tenth century Bishop of Prague, a Czech saint who was martyred during his missionary efforts to convert the Baltic Prussians.
(Polish) Saint Wojciech: Original Slavic name; literally "joy of the army" or "he who is happy in battle"
(Latin) Saint Adalbertus: Name used in medieval Latin texts and church documents; common in hagiographies
(Anglicized / English) Saint Adalbert: He is the patron saint of Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, and Prussia.
Over the years, the original cemetery has increased from its initial size of twelve acres to its present size of 250 acres. Presently, St. Adalbert has over 336,000 interments (12/31/22).
These Sacred Grounds contain beautiful and unique artwork, statuary and architeture throughout. Points of interest within the Cemetery include Shrines of St. Joseph, Immaculate Conception, Angel Gabriel, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Holy Innocents, Veterans, Mary Mother of God Garden Crypts, and Katyn Memorial.
St. Adalbert oversees the operation of Norwood Park Cemetery.
Explanation about "term graves" in the office of St. Adalbert's cemetery:
Until approximately 1960, the use of "term graves' was widespread in the cemetery. Burials were made one after another in rows. Although today's graves are perpetual, the "term graves" were for a limited number of years--usually twenty.
When the time expired, signs were posted in the Cemetery for a five year period informing lot holders that the "term graves" can be repurchased.
After the "term graves" expired, the "term grave" sections were renovated to accommodate new burials. The remains buried in the "term graves" were not disturbed, however the "term grave" sections were "built up" several feet and new sections were laid out.
We can locate some of the old "term grave" sections however, it is not possible to locate the individual "term graves."
