As Greenwood Cemetery required additional land for expansion, the Canton Cemetery Committee approached Mr. Patrick Rafferty about purchasing a portion of his property. Although he initially declined, he later agreed to the sale on the condition that part of the land be set aside for a Catholic cemetery. St. Mary's Cemetery was dedicated on October 6, 1872, and served as the community's Catholic burial ground until St. Joseph Cemetery was established in 1926. A granite marker identifies the St. Mary's section within Greenwood Cemetery.
