Gardner Cemetery
Also known as Gardner Township Cemetery
Gardner, Johnson County, Kansas, USA
The town of Gardner was established in 1857 and soon saw the creation of its cemetery just outside of the town's boundaries. A small hill southwest of town was originally selected for the grounds, featuring a square grid laid out with six east-west lanes and a perimeter roadway. The areas surrounding the outer roadway served as potter's fields on all four sides. Although burials began earlier, the initial plat—comprising of 154 lots—was not formally recorded with the Register of Deeds until 1866.
Due to an early fire, the cemetery's earliest records were destroyed, leaving the ownership of several lots and the identities of early interments unknown. Furthermore, many graves are unmarked today following the decay of the original wooden markers that were used when the cemetery started.
The Gardner Cemetery Association was organized in 1925.
On December 17, 1973, a corporate quitclaim deed was filed between the Kansas City Power & Light Company and Gardner Township for additional acreage south of the original grounds, granting the township clear title to the property.
The cemetery expanded again in 1998 with the acquisition of the Baker Addition, gifted to Gardner Township by Dale and Marcelle Baker.
Situated between the northbound and southbound BNSF railroad tracks near the 300 block of South Poplar Drive, the cemetery features its main entrance off South Poplar Drive.
