Mount Moriah Cemetery, situated in Philadelphia and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania encompasses nearly 200 acres with approximately 200,000 burials. In April 2011, the cemetery was abandoned and the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery, Inc. began working to restore the property, which had been neglected for many years. The Mount Moriah Cemetery Association, incorporated in 1855, is still in existence; however, there are no surviving members of the corporation. Since 2014, the cemetery has been under the care of a receivership granted by the Orphans Court of Philadelphia to the non-profit Mount Moriah Preservation Corporation. If you would like assistance in locating your ancestor on site, contact the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery at [email protected].
Two national cemeteries, the Naval Plot and the Soldiers Lot are located within the Mount Moriah Cemetery. Burials are mostly sailors and soldiers from the Civil War era. Both areas are overseen by the Washington Crossing National Cemetery and information about the sites should be directed to that office during normal business hours at 215-222-7510 or go to the Department of Veterans Affairs website.
