In 1837, one acre of land was granted for a church and cemetery on lots 127 & 128 McDonald Street in what is now Downtown Barrie. That became the original St. Mary's cemetery and it operated until approximately 1867. By then the Church Fathers had recognized that the cemetery was too small to accommodate the growth of Barrie, and so acquired 200 acres in Vespra Township, on what is now Sunnidale Road. At that time, the planned new cemetery was some distance from the original.
All of the graves from the old cemetery were re-interred to the new one over a six year period, roughly from 1871 to 1877. Once completed, the original church & cemetery were demolished and nothing remains of them today.
In this, the "new" St. Mary's cemetery, many of those original graves are in what is now called the Old Section and are unmarked.
