This cemetery is administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It was originally built by the German government in 1915 for the burial of war prisoners who died at a local camp. There are approximately 1800 graves of Commonwealth servicemen who died during the First World War, and five special memorials to airmen of the Second World War, who were originally buried in another cemetery, but whose graves were subsequently lost. By nationality there are 1714 British, 52 Canadian, 26 Australian, 5 South African and 4 New Zealanders interred or memorialized here.

Niederzwehren Cemetery should not be confused with Friedhof Niederzwehren, which lies further north and is used for burials of city residents.
