Footscray Cemetery is a historical cemetery within the City of Maribyrnong. It was reserved on 23rd April 1860 and gazetted a month later. The cemetery opened around 1869 and has since conducted 19,000 burials, making it a well-known landmark for generations of Melburnians. Around 1934, additional land was bought from William Angliss for £1973. In May 2016, Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust manages and operates the cemetery as a Class A trust on behalf of the Maribyrnong City Council. As of 2025, the Footscray Cemetery is no longer selling new graves but still accepts burials in already-bought plots.
Some locations of graves in this cemetery are unknown, and the trust is aware of this, as many records weren't put on the cemetery map beforehand. The grave numbers in some sections aren't sequential, so if they aren't mapped, they're most likely buried within the gaps on the map. And graves listed as ‘Grave COMMON' are public graves with no mapped location as all are unmarked. They were made for those who had no one to organise a burial, or no money to buy a private plot. The state manages all public burials, and is shared with others in the same situation. If the individual has no mapped area, we can't help you with any photo requests.
