Calvary Catholic Cemetery
Location: Mt. Morris, Michigan Affiliation: St. Mary Catholic Church
History & Origins
The establishment of Calvary Catholic Cemetery was requested by Bishop Caspar Henry Borgess (1826–1890), the second Bishop of Detroit. The initial parcel of land was purchased for $300 on January 22, 1872, from Christopher Hughes, a devout local landowner.
Mr. Hughes was instrumental in the Catholic history of Mt. Morris; in 1867, he successfully petitioned Detroit Bishop Peter Paul Lefevere for permission to build a local church and donated the land upon which St. Mary Catholic Church was eventually constructed.
Expansion & Layout
As the community grew, the cemetery was expanded in 1920 and again in 1928. Today, the grounds are organized into four distinct sections:
- The Old Section: Featuring the historic monuments of the parish founders.
- Guardian Angel Section
- Father Gannon Section
- Baby Land: A dedicated area for infants and children.
Current Status
As of 2026, Calvary Catholic Cemetery remains an active burial ground, primarily serving the parishioners of St. Mary Catholic Church and their families.
