Field of Mars Cemetery, located at Quarry Road (corner Cressy & Quarry Roads), Ryde, was proclaimed on 3 December 1887 and opened in 1890. The name "Field of Mars" was given by Governor Arthur Phillip in 1792 when he granted land to eight First Fleet marines in the area now known as Ermington and Melrose Park; it honours their military service by reference to Mars, the Roman god of war, and classical training grounds such as Rome's Campus Martius. The name later applied to a wider district, including the Field of Mars Common set aside by Governor King in 1804. The cemetery became a major burial ground for the Ryde district after smaller local cemeteries closed around 1910. Originally larger, the site is now about 17 hectares after part was converted to the adjoining Field of Mars Flora and Fauna Reserve. It is a multi-denominational cemetery (Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Greek Orthodox and others) managed by Metropolitan Memorial Parks, containing historic monumental sections, lawns, crypts and ash memorials, plus Commonwealth war graves from both World Wars.
