The fourth burying ground in Exeter, the Winter Street Burial Ground is located on the west side of town on Front Street (RT. 111) and just over the railroad tracks. It is a hexagonal plot bounded by tall stone walls within a triangular area formed by Front St., Railroad Ave. and Winter St. The land was bequeathed to the Town of Exeter in 1738 by Colonel John Gilman, whose house originally stood on the Railroad Ave./Winter St. point of the triangle where an artillery piece now stands. The bequest was conditional on a fence being erected around the burying ground within 3 years of his death. This condition was met and maintained with a wooden fence until a permanent stone boundary was erected in about 1823.

The cemetery contains burials of several individuals important in Revolutionary War and New Hampshire history, and Tabitha Tenney, recognized as the first female novelist published in the United States. In 2012, the cemetery was added to the New Hampshire State Registry of Historic Places.
