Lutheran Cemetery #17
Also known as Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery
Enterprise, Dickinson County, Kansas, USA
Pioneer families from several parishes in Sweden settled together during the last half of the 1800s and farmed the Smoky Hill River Valley east of Enterprise. Some of those families were from Ovansjö Parish, now Järbo Parish in Gävleborg County, Sweden.
First, they formed the Swedish Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Svenska Lutherska Kyrka. Their services were in Swedish and followed the Swedish Lutheran State Church. The site of the former Swedish Bethlehem Lutheran Church and cemetery, 1877 to 1982, of Center Township, Dickinson County, Kansas, is now called Lutheran Cemetery #17 and is located 4 miles east of Enterprise, just beyond the intersection of 2100 Avenue and Oat Road.
Some wanted to worship differently and formed a second church, Missionsvänner Swedish Mission. The Swedish Mission Church, later the Pleasant Hill Church, and Pleasant Hill Cemetery are just ¾ miles south on Oat Road. Organized in 1875 when services were held in members' homes. The former Pleasant Hill Church, built of native limestone in 1881, still stands at the center of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Thank you to each one of you who has been involved in these two beautifully maintained cemeteries. Both are the final resting place of those pioneer families and their descendants. Jon Jaderborg [email protected]
