On 4th September 1850, Augustus Short, First Bishop of Adelaide, purchased about four acres of land in Nailsworth for ecclesiatical purposes. This land was consecrated as a place of burial for members of the Church of England in 1853.
The land was conveyed by the Bishop to the Synod of the Diocese of Adelaide Inc. on the 20th on January 1881. The cemetery was first extended to eight acres, then twelve and finally to the present sixteen acres in 1926.
The first burial, that of William Carter, took place on the 15th of April 1853.
Bishop Reginald Harmer consecrated the cemetery chapel on the 28th of April 1905.
In 1989 the cemetery was opened to all Christian denominations.
