The original St. Raymond's Cemetery was founded in 1842 in front of the Catholic church in the Schuylerville neighborhood of Bronx, where St. Raymond Elementary School is now. Known as the Old Cemetery, it was expanded in 1847 to Tremont Avenue, but within 30 years was already almost full. Additional land was purchased about two miles from the church on Lafayette Avenue, which became known as the New Cemetery.
