The first mass in Belle River was in 1814 at the home of Antoine Goyeau on January 17, 1814 to honour the residents who perished in the War of 1812. From 1814 to 1833, it was common for wealthy Belle River residents to volunteer their large homes to the community for Sunday mass. In 1833, the Bishop of Quebec decided that a regular mission should be established in Belle River. The following year an altar was constructed where the shrine on West Belle River Road now stands. By 1845, a larger permanent church was built, and the parish was officially named the Parish of St. Simon and St. Jude in January 1869.

The original cemetery was established in 1825 on land donated by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reaume. As the community grew an additional cemetery was added directly across from the original. This property was donated by Albert and Louise Ouellette.
