This cemetery was established in the early 1880s. From 1 February 2025, the management of the Wonthaggi Cemetery transferred to the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT). This transfer was approved by the Victorian Government Department of Health.

Wonthaggi Cemetery has been in use since the towns early days, and is still in use today. It contains both lawn and monumental sections, as well as niche walls for cremated remains. The older parts of the cemetery are split into religious denominations, with many of the graves in the old monumental sections and almost all of the graves in the pioneer burial sections unmarked and/or in poor condition. While most old areas of the cemetery are full, there is a new lawn for burials, as well as new niche walls and a new monumental section. Some areas of the cemetery can become marshy in wet weather, and can have long grass, so be careful of snakes.
