Upon his arrival in 1859, Canon Owen Davys found St. Helen's to be in a state of great decay. From 1865-6, he undertook a restoration project, employing architect, Edward Browning, aiming to restore St Helen's to its original medieval glory.
Within the church are many interesting monuments, including that of Apsley Cherry-Garrard, the polar explorer, who is buried in the north-west corner of the churchyard. Also buried in the churchyard is British journalist, author and WWI correspondent, William Beach Thomas.
