St. Bartholomew's Churchyard

In 1834, the city of Exeter retained the Devon County Surveyor to design a burial ground and catacomb to be built below the old Bartholomew's Yard burial ground, which had exceeded capacity. The burial ground was located on the slope below the catacombs. Lower Cemetery was consecrated on August 24th, 1837. A total of 17,552 interments were made before it was closed in 1946.
