None of Athy's principal churches - St Michael's Church of Ireland built 1840, St Michael's Roman Catholic built 1803 and rebuilt 1964 or the Presbyterian Church built 1855 - have graveyards attached so burials continued at the site of the medieval St Michael's church that dates back to 1297 when the dedication to St. Michael is given, probably in deference to the St Michael family, Lords of Athy, and the likely founders. It is listed as KD035-022 in the archaeological survey of Ireland.

St. Michael's old graveyard remains open to burials within existing family plots, and a nearby new St Michael's Cemetery was opened in 1965 to cater for new plots.
