The first written record of North Mymms occurs in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1237 Thomas de St. Albans was instituted vicar of North Mymms. Around 1316 Simon de Swanland, a wealthy London merchant, acquired the manor of North Mymms. In 1328 he had built a chantry chapel, dedicated to St. Katharine, and endowed it for the maintenance of a priest. The new lord of the manor, Thomas Knolles, had the tower built sometime between 1430 and 1450.

In 1859, a major restoration was undertaken, the vaults were sealed, and brasses removed from the floor. Further restoration took place in 1871 and again in the 20th century.

St Marys stands within North Mymms Park. The churchyard and its extension extend south from the church and contain many interesting memorials, including nine commonwealth war graves.
