Saint Mark's Church was established in Kensington in 1876 as the German Evangelical Reformed Saint Mark's Church of Philadelphia. The congregation relocated to 525 Welsh Road in the Bustleton section of the city in 1962 after selling the property here to the neighboring Saint Christopher's Hospital, which needed the land to expand its parking lot. The congregation dissolved in 2010.


The church contained a receiving vault for members. It was used to temporarily hold the remains of its congregants that were being buried at other cemeteries, or when the ground was too frozen to open a grave. Many burials listed in obituaries and records as being made here were most likely intended to be nothing more than temporary, and most if not all final interments occurred elsewhere, such as at Greenmount or North Cedar Hill cemeteries.
