There was a church on this site in Saxon times, it is dedicated to St. Stativola, or Sidwell, a virgin, who is said to have been beheaded with a scythe, about the year 740, and to have been buried here.
This first St Sidwell's church was a country outpost of the church of St Michael's in Heavitree. It was much modified and rebuilt over the centuries.
And was rebuilt in 1812-13, in the Gothic style, except the tower, which was repaired and topped by an octagonal spire, in 1823.
The present building is a 1950's rebuild after the church was destroyed in the May 1942 bombing raid. The replacement church was built of local brick with some art deco style decorative features, and was designed by Lucas, Robert's and Brown of Exeter in 1957-58.
In recent years, the interior was refurbished into 18 flats and a small chapel. It has become a community centre with a small cafe and offers adult education courses. There is now a small community garden in the church grounds.
The birth, marriage and death registers date from 1569.
