On the 28 December 1836 Archbishop Polding blessed the Foundation stone for the St. Matthew's Catholic Church. The church registers commenced in January 1835, although the cemetery has been recorded to be in use in the 1820s.

The burial registers were difficult to transcribe due to the handwriting. The earlier registers have noticeable errors particularly with surnames. The registers from the latter half of the 19th century are sometimes illegible due to the handwriting of the priests.

In 1966 the local council took on the management of the cemetery. The register of burials have been misplaced and neither the council or historical society have them. The cemetery has been closed since at least 1996, with no new burials unless in a pre-purchased plot with evidence.

The oldest burial is Patrick Cullen in 1822
