Friedhof Golzheim is a closed cemetery in Dusseldorf. The northern part of the cemetery is in the Golzheim District and the southern part in the Pempelfort District. Today, the cemetery is used as a public park-like green area with the remaining tombstones under the monument protection act. Among the many renowned persons buried here is the founder of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow along with several of his associates. The first burial was held in Friedhof Golzheim in May of 1805. The burial order of 1825 was issued stating the size of the graves, cemetery fees, and having family plots. This order remained in effect until the cemetery was closed. The size of the cemetery was increased several times. A brick morgue was created in 1875, which was destroyed along with many grave monuments during the bombings of World War II. With more than 100,000 graves sites and no more land available to expand, the cemetery closed in 1884 for new burials. Family plots with empty graves sites remained open until 1897. With protest from the community, part of the cemetery was leveled for a main roadway at the turn of the century. The remains in these graves were removed and buried in a mass grave in the north part of the cemetery. This included several renowned citizen's graves. After World War II, there was an effort to preserve the remaining cemetery for historical reasons. By 1982, the cemetery had fallen in disrepair. Sections of the cemetery have been sold for a parking lot and other buildings, yet today there are about 350 old markers remaining in the cemetery.
