St. Mary's was built 1864-1866. It was intended that a tower and spire be included, but these were never built. The church was bombed on the night of 10th December, 1940 and lost some of it's features. The roof and windows were destroyed, as was the organ. Repairs were completed by 1949, and a new organ made by Compton installed in 1950.

St.Mary's appeared in the Guinness Book of Records for "The fastest white wedding on record". On the afternoon of September 22nd, 1939, the wedding of Mr & Mrs T.G. Franklin took place 71 hours from proposal to confirmation, and just 2 hours after obtaining a special licence. The bridegroom was apparently surprised at the bride's white and the bridesmaids lavender dresses.
