St. John's Church, Northern Liberties, was originally constructed in 1816 for an Episcopal congregation in what was then the Northern Liberties district of Philadelphia. The building is one of the earliest surviving works of the prominent American architect William Strickland and is an important example of the Free Neoclassical style common in the first decades of the nineteenth century.


The church later passed to a Romanian Orthodox congregation and was renamed Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church, the name by which the building is widely known today.


When the church was constructed, the surrounding neighborhood was part of Northern Liberties, an area that was not incorporated into the City of Philadelphia until 1854. At that time, American Street was known as St. John's Street, reflecting the presence of the parish.

The church originally included an adjoining graveyard. Much of this burial ground is now covered by a later addition to the church building.


A number of surviving gravestones have been moved from their original locations and are now leaned against the church walls.


The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
