German sailors raised funds in 1927 to build this monument, which was opened in 1936 to commemorate naval personnel who died in the First World War. The 85 meter high brick tower rises on the banks of the Kiel Fjord with a viewing platform and two internal elevators for visitors. In the memorial hall you can see flags from different eras of German naval history as well as inscriptions from ships that were lost in both world wars.
