Rookwood Catholic Cemetery (officially part of the Necropolis at Rookwood) is one of the oldest and most significant burial sites in Australia. Established in 1867 as a primary burial ground for Sydney's growing population. The first official interment recorded at the cemetery was that of a 14-month-old toddler, Catherine McMullen, on January 7, 1867. Spanning over 100 hectares, the Catholic section reflects the multicultural history of New South Wales, featuring grand Victorian-era sandstone monuments, the historic St Michael the Archangel Chapel (built in the 1890s), and modern mausoleums. While burials have been continuous for over 150 years, the cemetery evolved with the opening of the Mary, Mother of Mercy Crematorium in the 2000s, which stands as the first and only Catholic crematorium in Sydney. Today, the grounds serve as a serene historical landmark and a final resting place for over 300,000 individuals, maintained by Catholic Cemeteries & Crematoria to preserve the genealogical and spiritual heritage of the community.
