The Church of St James is a Grade II* listed building (No. 1265911) with Historic England. It dates from before the year 1200, and was probably built by the Lord of the Manor. With the exception of the tower, within 100 years, that building was demolished and rebuilt on a larger scale, to the same dimensions as we see today. In about 1500 the nave windows may have been inserted at the same time as the rebuilding of the adjacent Newbottle Manor. Some other windows are later. In 1856 further restoration took place as well as the addition of the present pews and choir stalls. A bad infestation of woodworm meant that the the roof timbers were replaced in 1974. The nave roof is unusual, as it covers both the nave and side aisle. Also, there is still a stairway leading up to the rood screen. The oak pulpit dates from 1584. There is a two-manual organ, built by Alfred Monk of London in 1892.
This is a list of some of the families that owned the adjacent manor or are linked to the church in some way - William de Pinu, de Greys, Wubrahams, the Earls of Thanet, Peter Dormer, and the Cresswells.
The churchyard has been closed for burials throughout this century. A new one was given by T. L. M. Cartwright of Newbottle Manor in 1903, and is located near Charlton, less than 1km south of the church.
