Newton St. Petrock is a small village about 8 miles south west of Great Torrington. St. Petrock Parish Church is Grade II listed. It has 12thcentury foundations with a west tower c. 1350. Restored and enlarged in 1887 under the architect Samuel Hooper of Hatherleigh. At which time Renaissance bench ends were discovered, having been buried under the flooring. The carvings are shields of the prominent Devon families of Prideaux, Hatch and Grenville. The stone font is Norman and the altar Elizabethan. Outside on the left is the tomb of Prudence Potter 1612-1689. The inscription reads ‘the rector's wife who died in 1689 aged 77 having spent her life in the industrious, charitable and successful practice of physick, chirurgery and midwifery'.
