The Reverend Thomas Brock Fuller, godson of Sir Isaac Brock, was the first rector at Port Robinson. His ministry there began in 1841, when worship was conducted in a school house, until 1844 when St. Paul's Church was opened for public worship. Fuller was also rector of Thorold and Stamford. In 1875 be became the first bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Niagara. At one time, there were four hotels, several stores, a grist mill, and no less than four separate churches in Port Robinson. As in most cemeteries, the surviving stones of St. Paul's Anglican church record the lives lived and deaths suffered in the community. The town's proximity to the canal no doubt explains the several drowning deaths recorded in stone. Perhaps the two most violent deaths recorded in marble are those of little Catharine Gardiner, who died after being struck by lightning in 1849, and Constable Charles Richards, who was shot and killed by William Townsend, leader of a notorious gang of thugs, the so-called "Townsend Gang", whose violent robberies terrorized Haldimand County in the early 1850's. Townsend himself fled authorities through the cemetery itself. Sadly, this would not be the last brush with crime experienced by the burying grounds, which regrettably have been seriously vandalized several times over the years. The heyday of Port Robinson has long passed. The burgeoning economy of Niagara has bypassed the village. Of the four churches, none conducts worship. The church building itself is worthy of note for its impressive black walnut pews and balcony. The church has several beautiful stained glass windows, particularly the window of St. Paul himself located directly above the alter. This window was donated in memory of Dilly and Sarah Coleman, both of whom are buried at the back of the church directly beneath the window.
