The Wentworth Mausoleum was commissioned after March 1872 by Sarah Wentworth, in accordance with the wishes of her husband William Charles Wentworth, to house his remains and those of other members of their family. It was designed by Mansfield Brothers architects, in March 1872 - March 1874, having been conceived as a combination of constructed and and natural elements. It was built over a rock from which Wentworth liked to view Sydney Harbour during his residence at Vaucluse (1827-1853 and 1861-62).

The building is listed in the NSW State Heritage Register. It may be visited and entered as part of escorted tours operated by Sydney Living Museums (formerly known as the Historic Houses Trust of NSW). https://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/events/wentworth-mausoleum-walking-tour
