Whakarewarewa village was established in 1325 in the geothermal Te Whakarewarewa Valley. The geothermal activity helped to make Whakarewarewa Village an impenetrable stronghold, and also provided heating and heat for cooking.
The Urupa (Māori cemetery) surrounds a small Catholic Church. The graves are above ground as everything under the surface of the ground is boiling hot and these amazing steam vents are everywhere including around the burial ground and the adjoining church, throughout the historic Whakarewarewa village where this burial ground is found, and all over Rotorua. The burial ground is near several beautiful hot pools, and just beyond the burial ground is the Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere.
The Whakarewarewa village has been preserved and now provides visitors with an opportunity to experience Māori culture and heritage. I have loved visiting it since I was a kid. Unfortunately, I wasn't into transcribing headstones back then, and they are not so easy to read now
