The original Bible Christian Ebenezer chapel was built at Shebbear in 1817. It still stands as part of an enlarged Lake Methodist church, together with the original school room. The graveyard contains the graves of many of those prominent within the Bible Christian movement including Mary Thorne who was the daughter of the founder, William Bryant. She lived with her husband Samuel at Lake Farm. Next to the chapel is Shebbear College, founded in 1832 for the sons of Bible Christians.
