In 1881, local religious leaders began exploring options for how to address the growing orphan population in the region. They became aware of the Oertel family, who owned a 46-acre farm in Marwood (now Cabot), who were not blessed with children themselves. It was then that the seed was planted for what would eventually become the Concordia Lutheran Ministries we know and love today.

Margaretha Oertel ceded her 46-acre farm to those local ministers in memory of her late husband, Christian, on December 4, 1882. The Evangelical Lutheran Concordia Home for Orphans and the Aged was one of the area's first facilities dedicated to serving the special needs of those groups.

A corner of the land was dedicated to burials of those who died while living at Concordia Home
