One of only two exclusively Sephardic cemeteries in England, the Novo Cemetery opened in 1733 and was enlarged by 1.7 acres in 1855. Approximately 9,500 burials took place there between 1733 and 1918.


By 1895, the cemetery was almost full. It was formally closed to adult burials in 1905, although adult interments continued until 1906; child burials continued until 1918, with a small number of exceptional interments taking place into the 1970s.


Approximately 2,000 graves remain in the surviving portion of the 1855 extension.


During the 1970s, the original 1733 section was cleared for the expansion of Queen Mary College. The remains of about 7,000 people were exhumed and reburied in communal graves on college-owned land near Brentwood, Essex. Part of the cemetery was also damaged by a bomb during the Second World War.
