St. Matthew's Episcopal Church was the first church built in the new gold rush camp of Fairbanks in 1904. The first hospital was built next to the church at the same time on the bank of the Chena River.
Archdeacon Hudson Stuck held the first services in 1905. It was Archdeacon Hudson Stuck who later started Fairbanks' first library (St. Matthew's Reading Room) in the back of the church (the Archdeacon was also the first person, along with Walter Harper to climb Mt. McKinley successfully).
The library served as an alternative to the saloons, offering the miners magazines, newspapers and over 1500 books.
In 2024, a columbarium was added to the grounds of the church were the hospital once stood.
