Oak Grove Cemetery and Mausoleum, on St. Charles Rock Road in North County on 65 acres, open in 1928.
The former owner, Marilyn Stanza, who married into the founding family, sold the property in 2016 as part of a settlement with the former attorney general of Missouri, which also included surrendering her undertaker's license. Stanza died in 2018. Upset Oak Grove families say the cemetery started going downhill within the last decade, after Marilyn Stanza took over operations from her ailing husband.
The once-majestic mausoleum is on Missouri's list of endangered historic sites. Problems include knee-deep weeds, large, dead trees and giant potholes. The beautiful vaulted ceilings are marred by crumbling plaster, chipped paint and mold. Beneath those spoiled ceilings is a large animal trap and wet floors.
Theft also plagues the mausoleum. Copper has been stolen from the building's exterior, as well as two statues at the building's entrance.
The new owner, William C. Harris, Jr., is renovating the mausoleum and cemetery and making every effort to restore this pristine, historic gem located in the heart of the Saint Louis area.
