ASSUMPTION Cemetery, in the northern part of Syracuse, is one of the three biggest in the city. The other two being OAKWOOD (the biggest) and WOODLAWN. It has a size of about 73 acres. Geographically most of the cemetery property is outside the Syracuse city limits, and belongs to Lyncort and Mattydale, but since the main entrance is inside Syracuse, its address is Syracuse, NY.
There are several sections which provide the final resting places for local friars and nuns. In the northern part of the cemetery there is a large mausoleum.
A section contains the remains of 4000-6000 individuals, who were originally buried in the German St. Joseph's Cemetery, located at 801 Pond Street and 700 First North, who were transferred to Assumption Cemetery in 1965-1966, to make way for a shopping center. The remains of about 30 Catholic nuns had already been transferred from St. Joseph's to Assumption cemetery in 1958.
The chapel at the main entrance, originally built in the 1920's was becoming structurally unstable and was torn down in 2023.
Assumption Cemetery is not affiliated with Assumption Church on North Salina Street, nor with the Diocese of Syracuse. It is owned and managed by the Franciscan Friars of Our Lady of the Angels Province, with an office in Rome, NY.
