The Friedhof Hamburg-Ohlsdorf was called Hauptfriedhof Ohlsdorf until 1991. It was officially opened on July 1st, 1877. So far, more than 1.4 million people have been buried there. Usually the family of the deceased "leases" the plot for 25-50 years, before the grave is leveled and re-used.

With over 1000 acres in size Ohlsdorf Cemetery the second largest in the world. Just the National Cemetery in Calverton on Long Island (New York) is larger.

In June 1953, a section of the cemetery was established as the the main cemetery and place of commemoration for Dutch war victims by the Netherlands War Graves Foundation. Most of these victims died at the Neuengamme concentration camp. There are 350 graves in the war cemetery.
