St. John's Episcopal Church is the oldest church in Richmond, built by Col. Richard Randolph in 1741 and gives the name to Richmond's oldest neighborhood, Church Hill. It was the site of two important conventions in the period leading to the American Revolutionary War, and is most famous as the location where Patrick Henry gave his closing speech at the Second Virginia Convention with the famous quotation "Give me liberty or give me death!" The churchyard cemetery is the resting place of Elizabeth Arnold Poe who was the mother of the famous poet Edgar Allan Poe, and George Wythe, one of the signers of our nation's Declaration of Independence.
The Church, various outbuildings, and the burial ground fill a City block bounded by Broad Street to the north, 24th Street to the west, Grace Street to the south, and 25th Street to the east. The area on both sides of, and behind, the Church building is the original burial ground established by the Church. In 1799, the City of Richmond purchased two half-acre lots on the front (Broad Street) side of the Church and established the first City-owned and maintained cemetery ground. The City maintains ownership to this day.
