San Antonio City Cemetery #8, also known in the past as Southside Cemetery, was originally opened for burials in 1904. On January 11, 1923 through a City Ordinance, San Antonio City Cemetery #8 was renamed to San Jose Burial Park. On March 1, 1923, San Jose Burial Park was designated to received burials for the city indigent. In 1974, the city decreed to donate all unclaimed bodies to medical science facilities. While Stinson Field Cemetery was active, many burials on the death certificate were listed as San Jose, but were buried at Stinson, which was adjacent. Over the years many families have tried to find their relatives grave at San Jose, only to find out the office has no record of the plot or burial. The individual funeral directors kept their own records of the locations.

This burial park has always been open for the public use as well as it's past designation for the county/city use.
