Originally called "St. Michael - Gottes Acker" which means "God's Acre", St. Michael was establised in 1851 and uses 48 acres and has approximately 40,000 burials.

The parishes of St. Boniface, St. Martin and St. Vincent De Paul were originally responsible for the maintenance of St. Michael. St. Elizabeth of Hungary added its support in 1906. The cemetery is now maintained by Catholic Cemeteries of Louisville.

There is one central office for the four major Catholic Cemeteries in Jefferson County (Saint John, Sant Louis, Saint Michael, and Calvary). The central office is located onsite at Calvary.
