The Hebrew Friendship Cemetery located at 3600 East Baltimore Street is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Maryland. The land for the burying ground was purchased in 1849 by the Fells Point Hebrew Friendship Congregation, and over the years the area has expended in area as well as those congregations that bury their families here. It is noteworthy that Bikur Cholim has a small section within Hebrew Friendship Cemetery. When the congregation closed in the early 1900's, the cemetery was maintained by a board of directors.
In 2011, the remaining aging board members approached the Jewish Cemetery Association in hopes to take over the cemetery. The JCA board met and unanimously approved the acquisition. The JCA has been managing the cemetery ever since.
Today it is one of the most beautiful and well-kept cemeteries in the country. The JCA puts a lot of time and effort into keeping Hebrew Friendship in good shape. It is noteworthy that Harry & Jeannette Weinberg are both buried in Hebrew Friendship, among other famous Jews such as Dr Robert Austrian who developed the pneumococcal vaccine, renowned painter Jacob Glushakow, and numerous U.S. Congressmen. As you enter the cemetery, you will notice a stone gatehouse built in 1870 which once served as a chapel. It currently houses the caretaker of the cemetery, and contains a small cemetery office where cemetery records date back to the founding of the cemetery. All of the records are being digitized and made available for genealogy research and cemetery visits.
