Legend suggests that Isaac Phillip Long was not the natural son of Philip Long born in wedlock, but adopted when his father married Mary Catherine Flood who was not legally married before marrying Philip Long and had 3 other children whose father is not known, William, Emmor, and Lacey Ann. Phillip adopted Isaac and Lacy Ann. DNA testing done on Isaac's descendants prove conclusively that he was indeed Philip Long's natural son.
Isaac was allegedly killed by a mule kick to the head near Short Gap, Mineral, West Virginia and is buried at the Saint Ambrose Catholic Cemetery, Cresaptown, Allegany, Maryland though no record of interment is known at this time.

Isaac fathered children with Mary Catherine Farber. It is not known if they were married in the traditional sense, but wills exist that indicate all children fathered with Mary Farber were known as Longs.

There is also some confusion as to when Issac was born. Censuses from 1850 through 1910 vary widely in birth year and age from a birth year of 1835 in 1900 to a birth year of 1818 in 1910.
