WARSAW, Ill. - Truman Harold Phillips, 100, a lifelong resident of Warsaw, Ill., died at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, in Montebello Healthcare Center, Hamilton, Ill., surrounded by family.
He was born on Jan. 14, 1909, in Warsaw, the son of Winfred and Lorena Mae Burkhead Phillips.
He married Georgia Evelyn Knight on Aug. 18, 1928, in Davenport. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before she preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1998.
Survivors include: six children, Richard (Marion) Phillips of Keokuk, Elsie Boyer of Warsaw, Robert (Shirley) Phillips of Warsaw, Nancy McLaughlin of Farmer City, Ill., Patricia (William) Mitze of Monticello, Ill., and Wilma Emmerson, also of Farmer City; 16 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; a sister; a grandson, Reggie; a stepgrandson; a stillborn grandchild; and three sons-in-law.
He attended White Prairie School, Star School and Rocky Run School, all in Hancock County, Ill. He worked in the Quad Cities and California before returning to Hancock County where he farmed for most of his life. He loved farming, especially taking care of the cattle, the ponies and watching the crops grow.
He enjoyed dancing, carpentry work, gardening and playing cards. He was a hard worker and loved people. He especially treasured the time he spent with his family.
He was an associate member of the Hamilton VFW.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lamporte - St.Clair Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastor Larry Mulch officiating.
Visitation is after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with family meeting from 11 a.m. until the time of services.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Warsaw.
Memorials have been established for Hancock County Blessing Hospice or Warsaw Ambulance Service.
