Singleton Monroe Maxwell, who went by Tim, was killed while in service to his country. He received the purple heart medal for his sacrifice at the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. He was the first citizen of Duluth to die in the war and as a way of memorializing him, the Duluth High School football stadium was named the Tim Maxwell Memorial Stadium. He was the only one of his parent's children to die in the war.
