Ernest ("Ernie") Andrew Arvanitis, 92, of Somers, NY, passed away on June 17, 2015.

He was born on December 18, 1922, in Lynn, Massachusetts. The son of Greek immigrants Andrew and Zoe (nee Banos)Arvanitis, Ernie was the sixth of seven children and a first-generation American.

At the age of 17, Ernie answered the call to serve his country during WW II. Enlisting in the US Army, he was ultimately placed in the Intelligence Services, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Upon returning from his tour of duty in Europe, Ernie took advantage of the opportunity provided by the GI Bill, studying at Boston University, where he received a Bachelor's degree, and Columbia University, where he received a Master's in Mathematics with a focus in statistical analysis.

While he was living in New York City, Ernie met his future wife. The couple married in 1951 and had two children together.

Following their marriage, Ernie worked as an actuary for Metropolitan Life Insurance from 1953 to 1982, where he ultimately rose to the position of Chief Actuary and Officer of the Company.

Following his retirement from Met Life, Ernie eagerly settled into the role of doting grandfather, where he helped to raise four grandchildren.

He was also active in the Society of Freemasons, the Somers chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Danbury, CT.

Ernie is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Zoe; and siblings, Chrissoula, Dean, Jimmy, George, and Bill.

He is survived by his wife, sister, of Denville, NJ; son, Robert (wife, two children,) of Westport, CT; daughter Allison, (husband, two children) of Brewster, NY; and loving nieces and nephews. His legacy also lives on in the myriad of people inspired by his dauntless spirit and boundless love.

The Rite of Burial will take place on Monday, June 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd., (Rt. 39 N), Danbury.

Entombment will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.

The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Ave., Danbury on Sunday, June 21, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Monday at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

The Trisagion Prayer Service will be conducted in the funeral home on Sunday at 6 p.m.
