On August 8, 1983 he led a coup against Montt and became president of the country. Due to international pressure about human rights abuses in Guatemala, he promised to return democracy to the country. After a new constitution was written and free elections held in 1985, he stepped down as president on January 14, 1986. He, along with former Presidents Jose Efran Ríos Montt and Fernando Romeo Lucas García, were later charged with murder, kidnapping, and genocide in the Spanish court system for the human rights abuses that occurred during their rule.
