Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Cranberry Baptist Church with Rev. Victor Church and Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Mr. Mathis was born April 28, 1934 in Wilkes County to Millard Monroe and Era Samantha Foster Mathis. He was a member of Cranberry Baptist Church and was a self-employed welder and poultry farmer. He served in the United States Air Force.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Myrna Loy Rhymer Mathis and one sister; Shirley.
He is survived by two sons; Christopher Mathis and wife Karen of Roaring River, Bryan Lee Mathis of Hamptonville, five grandchildren; Kayla Mathis Presnell and husband Travis, Kelly Mathis Ward and husband Cody, Kristy Joy Mathis, Carly Marie Mathis, Kasey Loy Mathis, one great grandson; Bryson Sparks, two brothers; Isaac Thomas Mathis and wife Betty of Kernersville and Millard Gurney Mathis and wife Peggy of Roaring River.
