Died, at 9 o'clock Monday night, Oct. 28, 1901, suddenly, at his residence near Springfield Junction, John B. Curtis, aged 58 years. Mr. Curtis had of late been feeling in much better health than for some years. He had worked hard all day Monday and upon returning home fell back in a chair dead. He was a laborer.
Surviving him are his wife [Sophronia L. (Downey) Curtis], one son, Roy B. Curtis, residing at home; one sister, Mrs. Charles Armentrout of Venice, Ill.; two brothers and one sister.
Mr. Curtis was a veteran of the civil war. He enlisted in 1862 with the Ninety-fourth regiment, Illinois volunteers. His wife [sic/should be mother] who was Christina Bartholomew, is a daughter of General Bartholomew, who is famous in the history of the United States. The funeral will be held from his late home. Military honors will be given him at burial, conducted by the chaplain of Stephenson Post, No. 30, G. A. R. Interment will be made at Oak Ridge cemetery.
